Separate a record from a recollection

‘You were born in the morning’ is useful information, but it is not the same as a document giving an hour and minute. Write down your birth date, birthplace, possible time range and the source of each detail. Label the time as recorded, approximate or unknown. This small distinction prevents a later reading from quietly turning a family recollection into an exact measurement.

Check a birth-related document if you have one, without assuming every record contains a time or that a recorded minute is perfect. If two sources disagree, keep both. Choosing whichever time produces the description you prefer does not resolve the disagreement. You can still learn the language of a chart while leaving its uncertain parts open.

Know which parts of the chart need a time

The Ascendant and houses are time-sensitive. A calculator filling an empty field with noon has selected a working assumption, not discovered your birth time. Astrodienst explicitly describes a hypothetical noon setting for unknown times. Before reading an output that gives confident houses or a rising sign, check whether the calculator knows the time or has supplied one.

The Moon deserves a separate check. Compare its position at the beginning and end of the possible birth interval before accepting a sign near a boundary. Even if it remains in the same sign, its degree can change enough to affect close aspect interpretations. ‘The sign is unchanged’ and ‘every detail is reliable’ are different claims. Keep that distinction in your notes.

Use the birthplace's historical local time

Do not convert an old local birth time using today's UTC offset by hand. The IANA Time Zone Database records historical local-time rules, including changes to daylight saving. This matters for a birth in Turkey as well as elsewhere. If you were born in Ankara and now live in London, Ankara remains the birthplace; your present location is a different piece of information.

When two calculators disagree, compare the input before comparing interpretations. Check the calendar date, local time and birthplace. For a birth close to midnight, the correct day needs particular care. Also check whether the form expects day/month/year or month/day/year. A familiar-looking date can be accepted in both formats and still describe two different days.

A useful notebook exercise

Make three headings: known, approximate and unknown. Put a confirmed date and city under the first, a remembered time window under the second, and unresolved details under the third. Leave the rising sign blank if you cannot establish it. The purpose is to distinguish evidence from an attractive, complete-looking diagram, not to fill every box on the page.

If a passage feels accurate, record it as something to reflect on rather than proof that a guessed time was correct. Write down examples that do not fit as well. For instance, if a description says you avoid conflict, consider occasions when you spoke directly. Keeping both kinds of example makes a personal notebook more useful than collecting only confirming sentences.
