What Is Astrology? Start With Your Birth Chart
Astrology is an interpretive tradition that gives symbolic meaning to cycles in the sky. A birth chart calculates real planetary positions; personality and future claims assigned to them are not scientifically validated predictions. The useful starting point is to separate what is calculated from what is interpreted.
How does astrology work?
A chart begins with a date, time and place. Calculation converts those details using the historical time zone, then locates the Sun, Moon and planets for that moment. Signs divide the zodiac into twelve sectors; houses depend on the horizon and meridian at the birth place. Aspects are angular distances between planetary positions.
Interpretation comes next. Two readers can emphasize different parts of the same chart. Keeping the calculated position separate from the story drawn from it helps expose claims of false certainty. Is a Sun sign the same as a birth chart?
No. Popular daily horoscopes usually use only the Sun sign. A full birth chart also includes the Moon, Mercury, Venus and other planets, plus the rising sign and houses when birth time is known. Two people born on the same day can share a Sun sign yet have different rising signs and houses if their times and locations differ.
If you are new, begin with the Sun, Moon and Ascendant. Then look at houses and aspects. Never invent a birth time to fill a form. On a Moon sign change day, and for time-dependent houses, uncertainty should remain visible.
Which method answers which question?
Synastry compares two separate birth charts. A composite chart uses midpoints between two people's planetary positions to make a shared chart. Horary astrology casts a chart for the moment a specific question is asked rather than for a birth. They answer different kinds of questions.
Transits compare today's sky with a natal chart; the solar return is calculated for the Sun's annual return to its birth position. Electional astrology compares possible start times for an activity. None should replace evidence or professional advice for important health, legal or financial decisions.
