Birth Chart / Apparent Motion
Check natal retrogrades.
See the apparent motion of eight planets from Mercury to Pluto at birth. Unknown hour? We do not hide a station-day boundary.

Retrograde or direct?
Choose your birth date, recorded hour if known, and city. This checks apparent motion at birth, not future retrograde dates.

Apparent motion
Retrograde describes a planet appearing to move backward in zodiac longitude from Earth. Its orbital direction does not reverse.
Birth sky, not today's sky
This checks eight planets at your birth moment. Today's Mercury retrograde or a future station calendar answers another question.
Show station uncertainty
Without a birth hour we compare both ends of the local day. If direction changes, we do not assign a falsely certain retrograde label.
Which planets were retrograde when I was born?
Check Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto separately at your birth moment. If a planet's geocentric ecliptic longitude decreases across a short interval, this tool labels it apparent retrograde; if it increases, it labels it direct. The Sun and Moon are not in this retrograde list, and the lunar node is a calculated point rather than another planet. The result helps explain what the ℞ mark in a birth chart refers to.
Enter your birth date, recorded hour if available, and city. The city's historical time zone turns a local clock reading into UTC; the calculation stays in your browser. Substituting a guessed time can create false certainty near a station. This table is not a complete list of signs or houses: use the full chart for that context. An astrological interpretation is a separate step from calculating observed motion.
What if my birth hour is unknown?
A planet's apparent direction usually does not change over one local date. Birth date alone can therefore answer retrograde versus direct for many people. But if you were born on a station day, when apparent motion turns around, morning and evening may fall on opposite sides. Reducing that entire birthday to a made-up noon birth time would hide the uncertainty.
The unknown-time option compares 00:00 and 23:59 in your selected local time zone. A matching status is displayed; if the direction changes we say 'time needed'. The engine checks short-interval longitude change and does not claim to date the exact station instant or construct a precise station chart. Historical time-zone support and nearby-city substitutions can add uncertainty. A date alone cannot give your houses or rising sign either.
Natal retrograde differs from today's Mercury retrograde
A natal retrograde label stays attached to the birth chart; whether Mercury is retrograde this month is a changing transit. 'I was born with Mercury retrograde' and 'Mercury is retrograde today' do not mean the same thing. This single flag cannot measure someone's communication ability, diagnose a difficulty, or reliably predict a relationship or job outcome.
Astrological writers sometimes use a retrograde placement as a metaphor for revisiting or reflecting on a theme. Any such reading needs the planet's sign, house, aspects and the person's actual situation, expressed as a possibility rather than a verdict. ℞ is not a mark of failure.
