The Descendant
The Descendant starts the seventh house. It sits on the western horizon opposite the Ascendant and needs a reliable birth time and place.
One-to-one relationships
Traditionally this house concerns close bonds and partnerships, including people with whom you make decisions, not only romance.
One factor is not enough
The sign on the cusp, planets in the house and their aspects are different layers. None can describe another person on its own.
An empty house is normal
Having no planet in the seventh does not rule out relationships. Every chart has twelve houses, and planets do not occupy all of them.
What the seventh house describes
In astrology, the seventh house concerns the space between 'me' and the person across from me. Close relationships, explicit partnerships and sustained collaboration are traditional themes. It is not a calendar that gives a wedding date. A house may draw attention to a relationship question; it cannot reveal another person's thoughts, behavior or future decisions.
The Ascendant begins the first house and the Descendant begins the seventh. Together they form an axis. The first side asks how you show up; the other asks what matters when you sit down with another person. This is symbolic language: the displayed degree is a calculation, while the relationship meaning attached to it is an interpretation. Keeping those layers separate makes the reading more useful.
How to find the seventh house in your chart
Gather your birth date, a recorded time if possible, and your birthplace. In Baby Astro's free chart calculator, choose a city suggestion and calculate the chart. Find the first-house cusp and the seventh-house cusp directly opposite it. Note the Descendant sign and degree; then check whether any planet falls inside the seventh house. Those two observations are enough for a first pass. You need not interpret every aspect at once.
If your birth time is unknown, do not accept a calculator's default hour as though it were your own. The Ascendant and Descendant depend on the horizon and can move when the birth minute or city changes. Postponing a seventh-house judgment is better than borrowing false precision. What if your seventh house is empty?
No. A chart has twelve houses but fewer commonly interpreted planetary bodies, so several houses normally appear empty. 'Empty' only says there is no planet placed inside that house. Readers may also consider its cusp sign, the sign's ruler and related placements elsewhere in the chart. An empty seventh house does not mean you will not marry, be loved or manage a partnership.
Imagine two people with no seventh-house planet. One may struggle to discuss boundaries; another may maintain a steady reciprocal bond. An empty-house label cannot account for that difference. Real experiences and other chart factors matter. Even then, astrology is a reflective framework rather than a test of relationship quality. Evaluate a relationship through actual behavior, trust and conversation.
A seventh-house reading is not synastry
The seventh house is in your own birth chart. It does not require another person's chart and can prompt questions about your relationship expectations. Synastry compares two people's planets and house overlays. If you are asking whether a particular person is a good match, your Descendant sign alone cannot answer that. Cross-chart aspects and overlays need birth data for both people.
Synastry does not deliver a 100-percent compatibility verdict either. Looking together at Moon, Venus, Mercury and Saturn contacts may start a useful conversation, but it cannot measure trust or decide whether you should stay.
