The twelve houses: where life unfolds.

5 min read4 chaptersBaby Astro

A practical atlas from the first house to the twelfth: the life area each describes, what an empty house means and how to calculate your own cusps reliably.

Precise house cusps need a birth time and city; the basic chart is free.

01

House = life area

If a planet names what and a sign suggests how, a house asks where. This is interpretive language, not a scientific personality measure.

02

Time and city

The Ascendant anchors the house framework. Without reliable birth time and place, do not present exact house placements.

03

Empty houses happen

No planet in a house does not erase that area of life. All twelve houses exist in every chart.

04

Compare the method

Placidus and whole-sign houses can place cusps differently. Check the method before comparing charts of the same birth data.

How do houses work in a birth chart?

An astrological chart is a circle divided into twelve life areas called houses. The first begins at the eastern horizon of the birth moment, the Ascendant. Zodiac signs always cover thirty degrees of ecliptic longitude, but houses need not be equally wide in a system such as Placidus. Aries is not always your first house and Capricorn is not always your tenth. House numbers and zodiac signs answer different questions; do not treat them as synonyms.

For example, Venus in the second house could invite reflection on values, resources and choice. Venus's sign adds another layer about style of expression. In another person's seventh house, the same planet is considered in a partnership context. Neither placement alone yields a verdict about money, marriage or character. Other chart factors and real-life experience matter.

Houses one through six: self and daily life

The first house begins with how you show up; the second concerns possessions, income and value; the third covers nearby people, siblings and everyday learning. The fourth traditionally addresses home and roots, the fifth play and creative expression, and the sixth daily work, routine and care. This order is not a script for a life. All six areas can be active together, and a house does not become important only when a planet is in it.

The sixth house is a useful reminder of astrology's limits. Although traditionally associated with habits and care, it cannot provide a medical diagnosis; a planet there is not proof of illness. Likewise, the second is not an income promise. Turn these topics into reflection questions, but ground health, work and financial decisions in real conditions and qualified advice when needed.

Houses seven through twelve: others and the inner world

The seventh house concerns meeting and partnership; the eighth shared resources and trust; the ninth wider horizons, higher learning and worldview. The tenth concerns public role, the eleventh friends and community, and the twelfth withdrawal and private inner life. This atlas is a quick reference. The separate guides to houses seven and ten explain the Descendant, the Midheaven, birth-time requirements and frequent misreadings in more depth.

Reading the eighth as a date of death or the twelfth as an inevitable catastrophe impoverishes the subject and creates fear. A house label cannot know the future. Eighth-house symbols might instead prompt a conversation about a shared account or boundaries; what actually happens depends on consent and the real situation. Reflection is more useful than a fate claim.

How to find the houses in your chart

Calculate a free birth chart with date, reliable time and city. Begin at the ASC and first-house cusp on the wheel, then find the seventh cusp opposite it. Next look for the tenth cusp in the upper part of the chart and notice why these points would move if the time or city changed. Baby Astro shows the basic chart free and, with exact time and place, displays the seventh- and tenth-house cusp degrees separately. The numbered wedges on the wheel show the remaining houses.

If the time is unknown, start with a time-limited chart instead of asking a tool to invent an hour. Even with a known time, two apps may place planets in different houses if they use different house systems. Baby Astro uses Placidus at most latitudes and whole-sign houses at very high ones. Compare the method, historical time zone and city coordinates before interpreting a discrepancy. Check the plan page for the scope and current local price of a detailed paid reading before deciding to subscribe.
