Not twelve options. Five.

Your Venus sign is the sign Venus occupied at the moment you were born. A birth chart is a list of where things stood at that instant — the Sun in one sign, the Moon in another, each planet in its own place — and Venus is one line of that list.

Tradition puts a specific question to Venus: what you find attractive, and how you go about closeness. Where the Sun describes what you are growing towards and the Moon what you need, Venus describes what you like — aesthetics, pleasure, comfort, the manner you use when you move towards someone. It is the reason the Astro-Style section is built on Venus rather than on the Sun.

What separates this page from most writing on the keyword is that there are no twelve paragraphs of personality here. Instead it describes how Venus actually behaves in the sky, because that behaviour genuinely constrains which signs you can have — and the personality lists never mention it.

Venus orbits inside Earth's own orbit. That is why it never appears far from the Sun in the sky: it is always close to it, visible either in the east before dawn or in the west after sunset. You cannot see Venus overhead at midnight — it is not possible.

This has a measurable consequence. Computing every day from 1930 to 2030 with the same ephemeris this site uses for its charts, the largest separation between the Sun and Venus comes out at 47.21 degrees. Since a sign is thirty degrees, that separation can carry Venus at most two signs away from the Sun. A three-sign gap never occurs in that span.

So there are not twelve possibilities for you, there are five: your Sun sign, the two signs before it and the two after. Across the 36,865 days sampled, the split runs — Venus in the same sign as the Sun 23.8% of the time, one sign away 58.3%, two signs away 17.9%. The most common case by far is Venus sitting immediately next door to the Sun sign.

The practical use is this: if you know someone's Sun sign, you already know a great deal about their Venus. And before you have your own computed, you can narrow it to five candidates yourself.

The most repeated mistake about the Venus sign is the line that Venus spends about three weeks in a sign. The median is close to that — across 1,014 passages measured between 1950 and 2030 the median is 25 days — but the mean is 28.8 and the distribution has a very long tail.

The cause is retrograde motion. Venus turns retrograde roughly every nineteen months, and when that period falls inside a sign the planet enters it, stops, reverses, stops again, and then crosses the same sign a third time going forward. The longest stay measured is 126 days: the passage beginning 4 April 1996, close to four months.

The opposite extreme exists too. If Venus has only just crossed a boundary when it turns retrograde, it can spend a handful of days in that sign — the shortest measured passage is four days. If you were born in one of those windows, your Venus placement is one you share with very few people.

The consequence is that estimating a Venus sign from a birth date is not as reliable as it is for the Sun. A table read off a calendar goes wrong during retrograde periods. The position has to be computed.

In classical astrology Venus is the planet of attraction and value: what you find beautiful, what you take pleasure in, what strikes you as worth keeping, and how you go about closeness. It gets called the planet of love, but the traditional remit is wider — aesthetics, harmony, comfort and taste all sit under the same heading.

That is why the Venus sign turns up so often in relationship writing, and it is where care is needed. A Venus placement does not tell you who suits you. Comparing two charts — synastry — describes where two people's planets stand relative to each other; it does not describe who will be happy with whom. The most honest way to read your own Venus is as a vocabulary rather than an explanation. You already know why you are drawn to particular colours, particular rooms, particular ways of being treated. A Venus sign may give you words for it. If it does not, the description is what is wrong, not you.

Venus's position is not read off a table. Baby Astro computes its ecliptic longitude for your birth moment from an ephemeris and asks which thirty-degree slice that falls in — exactly the same path as the Sun, the Moon and the other planets. Every number on this page was measured with that same ephemeris rather than carried over from other writing.

Knowing your birth time is not critical here. Venus advances about a degree a day on average, so it only changes sign within a single day if you were born very close to a boundary. Without a time the calculation uses noon UTC, which gives the right answer on the large majority of dates.

The app shows the degree alongside the sign, because the degree tells you how solid the answer is. If your degree sits in the first or last few degrees of a sign — particularly if you were born near a retrograde period — an exact birth time could change it. If it sits mid-sign, it could not.
