What does the tenth house mean?

In astrology the tenth house is associated with roles you take in public life: work, visible responsibilities, long-term aims and the contribution you want to make where others can see it. It is not a label that names the one career you must choose. The same person may be publicly visible as a parent, founder, teacher or volunteer at different times. This house offers a symbolic starting point for reflection, not a résumé or a salary forecast.

Across the chart, the fourth house traditionally concerns roots and private life. To decide whether an ambition serves you, consider not only how it looks externally but what sustaining it asks of your home life. Reading the two houses together is more useful than treating a single placement as a talent test, a hiring decision or a guarantee of success.

Is the Midheaven the same as the tenth-house cusp?

The MC, or Medium Coeli, is the point where the celestial meridian meets the ecliptic at the birth moment. In quadrant house systems such as Placidus, the tenth house begins there. Change the house system and the geometric MC can lie inside a different house. It would therefore be incorrect to call the tenth cusp of an equal-house or whole-sign chart the MC automatically. If two chart tools give you a different tenth-house sign, compare their house systems first.

Baby Astro uses Placidus when it can be calculated, with a whole-sign fallback at very high latitudes. For that reason the app labels the displayed result the 'tenth-house cusp'; it does not present it as a separately calculated MC degree in every system. Knowing the calculation method is a better first step than relying on a generic list of MC interpretations.

How to find your own tenth house

Start with your birth date, a documented time if you have one, and your birthplace. In the free birth-chart tool, select a suggested city and calculate. The result shows the sign and degree on your tenth-house cusp; the wheel shows house ten. Note any planets inside that house too. For a first reading, the cusp sign, planets in the house and its fourth-house opposite are enough. You do not have to turn every placement into a list of professions.

If you do not know your birth time, do not trust a precise cusp or MC result. Some planetary signs may remain stable across the day, but horizon and meridian points depend on birth time and place. Letting a tool choose noon and then declaring an exact MC sign borrows precision you do not have. Read the unknown-birth-time guide and begin with placements that do not require a house calculation.

What if the tenth house is empty?

An empty tenth house is normal. There are twelve houses and no reason to expect a planet in each one. 'Empty' only means none of the planets under consideration falls inside that house. It does not say you will be unemployed, fail to advance or lack purpose. Traditional readers may also examine the sign on the cusp, its ruler and other chart factors. None can replace your choices, skills or economic circumstances.

Likewise, a striking career symbol in a chart cannot guarantee success. A more useful question is: What responsibility do I want to sustain, what kind of visibility fits me and under what conditions could I do it? The free chart first lets you inspect the calculation.
